Kristallögat / The Crystal Eye (1961)
A young person’s road to accepting the terms of life is the central theme in Enquist’s debut novel. The protagonist, Jenni, is at a crititcal point in her life at the start of the novel, the walls she has built around herself are getting higher and higher and she needs to find a way out. It seems to her that she has lost touch with reality and the people around her. She meets a man and in their conversations, the story of her life is revealed. This is a story that shows how seemingly insignificant influences can force a person into a deadlock, but it is also a story that slowly changes Jenni herself.
“It is a fine and convincing debut by a most confident debutant.” Lars Gustafsson, Poet
