Färdvägen / The Journey (1963)
Per Olov Enquist’s second novel takes place in Europe and describes one eventful year in the life of three people. On the surface the novel is about how their adventures transform them but for the young anonymous protagonist the events have another meaning. When he is trying to sum up his experiences from the journey, the story about the trip becomes the story of his whole life. It describes a double conversion process, but also a crises of attitudes that finally lets the man step out of his self-centeredness to new more honest experiences.
