Hess / Hess (1966)

Who is Hess? Is he an existing historical person, or is he a dreamed projection of a human being, a way of life? Per Olov Enquist’s novel leaves no clear answer. The novel has a surprising form – both wide epic, academic discourse and text mobile – and creates a lot of freedom for the reader. It can be read in many ways: as a meta-novel, as an attempt to portray passivity own neurosis, as a novel about ”the Swedish”, as a love story, as a new type of psychological or political novel.
